Coming at the midst of the golden era of turntablism in 1997, a monthly open turntable event debuted at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe in the Lower East Side of New York City.  At the time, a few familiar battle crews would come and hone their skills along with local amateur tablists from the area.  For a few hours every month, burgeoning tablists and battle DJs would come to connect, collaborate and learn with the intent of progressing their own talent and the artform.

Over the next couple of years, TableTurns went on to become the seminal open turntable event and eventually branched out to other markets including Montreal, Toronto and the west coast.  Salute to Doug 'Sugarcuts' Cohen and Rocky LaMontagne for the original conception and for helping build the foundation.

TABLETURNS: TODAY

Fast forward 20 years later -- With the advent of social media, many turntablists and turntable artists became used to displaying their skills over the internet.  Scratch and beat juggling videos from the bedroom became the norm.

To help expand on the culture, boost progression and get folks into a community setting, TableTurns was officially reestablished with Doug's blessing in the winter of 2017 by DJ Roli Rho of the 5th Platoon along with DJ dueL from the Rhythm Method DJ Battles of the mid 90s.  The event aims to bring back the ‘learn from your peers’ objective for today’s promising generation of tablists.

DJs and Turntablists are encouraged to not only use the traditional turntables, mixers and vinyl; but also to incorporate the newest technology: anything from drum machines and DVS to keyboards and controllers.

Although the event has become more community based, the goal hasn't changed -- to provide a non-competitive platform for DJs to come work on their routines, experience performing in front of a captive audience and most important, to network with other DJs.

If you’d like to get involved, please follow us on Instagram at @tableturnsworld for event information.

Everyone is invited. All ages are welcome. Never a cover. Sometimes pizza!
